Luxembourg can be extremely expensive, but there are many things you can do with the family at no cost. Yes. No cost. And have a great time!

Here is our list of 10 fun and free family activities in and around Luxembourg! 

Minett Park Fond-de-Gras

Once one of the most important mining centres in Luxembourg, this incredibly unique industrial park is a great place for the whole family to explore. It’s a day filled with sky, nature and history. You can enjoy taking an interactive look into Luxembourg’s mining history. This small open-air park has many complimentary activities including different walking paths, restoration sites, and museums. Though there are a few train rides and activities that are available to purchase, they are relatively affordable and not required to enjoy the site. 

Wenzel Circular Walk

Looking for a way to get the family outdoors and around the city? This is the perfect route to get the kids active and moving! This path is well-marked and hits many of the highlights of Luxembourg City, including the Bock Du Casemates and Chemin de la Corniche. To find the digital map of this route, simply go to the Luxembourg City website. This will provide you with a clear route to follow with several highlights marked on the map!

Pirate Ship Playground

This unique playground stands out due to its elaborate main attraction: a large-scale pirate ship! Located near the heart of Luxembourg City on Playground Avenue Monterey, this park is great for kids with big imaginations who love the outdoors. And if your kid is going through a pirate phase, even better! The playground has various play areas, including some water games that make it perfect for warmer weather days.

National Musée um Fëshmaart

This museum is free for all to enter and has a little something for everyone. Although it may be hard for the younger ones to pay attention to all of the exhibitions, the museum provides a discovery booklet for kids 6 and up. This booklet helps to guide the kids through the museum and get them engaged with the different collections in the museum. You can pick up the guide at the museum for free or download it ahead of time from the museum’s website.

Escher DĂ©irepark

Looking for a chance to reconnect with nature as a family? This deer park is the perfect place! With access being completely free, this little oasis is just outside of Esch-sur-Alzette. Though it is a little bit of a hike to get to the park, it is a lovely adventure with a beautiful trail. Here your family has the opportunity to see a variety of different animals and even feed them. The deer park has two different playgrounds onsite which are perfect for the little ones. It also has a small treehouse cafe if all of the animal-watching works up an appetite. 

Musée Dräi Eechelen

A perfect visit for any kids who have a particular interest in castles and history! This museum was once a fortress that overlooked Luxembourg city. You can now tour the restored structure and learn about its history while seeing different works of art. The permanent exhibition goes through the history of Luxembourg. This museum also has a notebook for the younger kids to keep them entertained and engaged with the fortresses’ history!

Upper SĂ»re Lake 

This picturesque lake has free-to-access beaches that are wonderful for the whole family! The bathing season runs from May 1st until September 30th, so be sure to enjoy it while it lasts. With a free bus that goes around the lake on Saturdays and Sundays, this is a great transport option if the little ones get tired out from all the fun in the sun. Before you go be sure to check out the Esch-Sur-Sûre tourism website to double check which beaches are open for swimming!

City Tram and Bus Museum 

This museum details the history of transportation in Luxembourg and just like the public transit here, it is completely free! With various restored trams and buses to explore, this museum is perfect for any kids who love to understand how things work. Several models help to guide visitors through the evolution of transportation in Luxembourg! This museum will teach everyone something new about Luxembourg’s past vehicles.

PĂ©itruss Skatepark 

Has one of your kids taken up skateboarding? Then this is the spot for you! This free park area in the Grund is a great area for them to practice and work on new skills. If nobody else wants to skate, no worries. The area is surrounded by a lovely green space that is perfect for relaxing and watching the river flow by. This is a great option if you want to encourage your child’s adventurous side!

Melusina Statue

Luxembourg’s famous statue is a great spot for a photo op with the family! It also can be a good tool for teaching your kids about one of the most famous legends in Luxembourg, the mermaid Melusina. The statue is in a very picturesque area of Luxembourg City, so be sure to take in the sights while you are there! The statue is located on the banks of the Alzette River near the Rocher du Bock.
