We’re fortunate here in Luxembourg as it is a tolerant and open minded society; people of all shapes and sizes are welcome! Nevertheless, if you think it’s hard to get a date in Luxembourg, try being single AND gay! Luckily City Savvy’s Romain Mancinelli-Mirti is on hand to tell you the top places to meet gay people in the Duchy.
Being gay in Luxembourg can be a challenge; gay Prime Minister notwithstanding. Generally though, the Luxembourgish LGBTIQ people usually mingle with their heterosexual friends and fit very well in a mostly tolerant population.
There are a few places that are more gay-friendly than others, however – here are my top picks for food, drinks and party!
LUNCH & DINNER
Charles Sandwich Restaurant
At Charles Sandwich Restaurant you’ll find the best burgers I’ve ever eaten. They are juicy, fresh, big and just delicious! My top recommendation is the plain American original BBS or BBCS – for burger, bacon, cheese and salad – and, of course, make it a combo with home cut potato fries and a small Caesar salad parmesan with home made dressing. It’s home made; it’s delicious; and there is no better service in town! They are friendly, open minded, speak more than 5 languages and will always welcome you with a big smile. The environment is woody, cosy and vintage whether you choose to dine on the main floor, on the terrace or in the cellar eating area. They value quality over quantity, which means… don’t delay during rush-hour because fresh means that they can run out of salad or potatoes!
- Good for: homemade, delicious burgers served with the widest smiles in town
Restaurant La Caravelle
If you liked Monkeys Bar’s Drag Shows you will love the Show-Dinner at the Restaurant la Caravelle. In fact, after Monkeys closed, our Drag Queens were on the loose with no place to perform anymore! But La Caravelle, the majestic ship in Bertrange, came to their rescue and seems to have become the new home of Thalia Garcia and her friends – at least for some nights in a year.
La Caravelle is a beautifully remodelled restaurant, accented with antique elements from old caravels, the Iberian workhorse and one of the most important ships not only in Iberian history, but in the history of the world. Without that distinctively-shaped ship Columbus probably would have never reached the Americas.
Chocolate House Nathalie Bonn
If you have to recover from a break-up or just want to feed your soul, you’ll be more than welcome in this warm, 3 storey-high ancient house with wooden interior and terrace for a hot chocolate or breakfast. Hot milk with a chocolate spoon is the traditional drink in this place, but oh boy (and girl), which one to choose? There’s at least one ChocoSpoon for every taste – even if you like it hot (there’s a chilli one). And once the chocolate has melted off of your wooden spoon, I bet you’ll want to reuse it by digging into one of the fantastic homemade cakes!
The second Friday of every month after closing time, on the first floor, the ‘Pink Ladies’ (the Lesbian group of the Luxembourgish LGBT association ‘Rosa Lëtzebuerg’) invite the ‘out’ and ‘less out’ women to their Uucht (Luxembourgish for ‘to get together in the evening hours’).
Chocolate is good for the gay soul… and you’ll be surrounded here!

The milkshake is yesterday’s news; today, it’s all about chilling yoghurt to minus zero, blending in some fresh fruit and sprinkling your creation with sweet, sweet candy. Hey, it’s fat free! You’ll not only find frozen yoghurt with real milk but a huge variety of healthy organic drinks as well, including their incomparable smoothies. Even lactose-intolerant people can indulge; SmooJo’s have soy milk on hand. They also have delicious cupcakes and cookies if you feel a bit peckish.
Smoojo features free WiFi in a stylish clean space and a nice terrace, just two steps off of the ‘Groussgass’ (Grand Rue – the main shopping area) next to ‘Lush’. If you like ‘bears’ or men with beards and karaoké, this is a secret meeting point after the opening hours for you. Just ask the SmooJo Team for their next Frozen Bear Party and sing along.

Café des Artistes
A real institution in Luxembourgs’ Grund, less than 50 steps away from the elevator that connects the Holy Ghost Plateau and the lower city. This vintage old-fashioned café has a unique decoration of ancient posters (even on the ceiling) and money bills from around the world. Fernande and Oscar alternate their live piano performances with folkloric Luxembourgish and well-known international songs. The best way to practice your Luxembourgish skills in a charming atmosphere by candle light with the piano tinkling.
Gay or straight, old or young, rich or poor, bankers or artistes, this is truly the best mixed and people friendly location in town. Get there early because it’s always very crowded.
- Good for: Romantic candles, a piano playing and the most charming atmosphere.
