Spring, the final frontier. Warmer weather and a glimpse of the sun is what we’ve spent the last six months waiting for. With the ashes of Buergbrennen already in the stratosphere, it is time now to gather your nearest and dearest and mark this stunning season with a Sunday brunch. Brunch: That glorious combination of breakfast and lunch which typically begins late morning and with the help of good friends stretches all the way until 3 pm.
It’s Sunday and you’ve invited your friends round. They slowly trickle in, perhaps a bit fuzzy from the night before so as you catch up, you open the first, second, (who’s counting) bottle of your favourite Luxembourgish crémant.
Every gossip tastes better with a bit of music in the background so you open your music library and face the usual dilemma – everyone wants you to play a different song! How about a playlist then? It’s a quick compromise and a chance to show off your knowledge of good music.
I recommend starting slowly, with a classic electronica from Télépopmusik, some classy drum and bass from Adam F, and a deliciously soulful dance tune by Brand New Heavies. Then we will swiftly move on to the immortal vocals of Ella Fitzgerald in Gabin’s rendition of “It Don’t Mean A Thing”, followed by the ultimate sing-a-long on the afternoon, OutKast’s “Ms. Jackson”. Who doesn’t remember those lyrics?
Want more? The next two songs will definitely liven up the mood with their sassy beats, taking you straight to the flashback song of the day, a perfect conversation starter.
Do you remember the first time you saw the video to the Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic?” What was the first video you ever saw? Chances are, you and your guests will be a tad tipsy at this stage, which will result in some funny memories, and it will also give you a chance to chill a bit during a neurotic trip hop from Björk’s second solo album.
And if the last two songs make your friends hungry for more, then it’s the perfect time to serve the food. Gudden Apetit!
