…or how to be kind to your vegetarian friends!

Vegetarians still like their omnivore friends, but dining out together can be tricky, especially in Luxembourg where menus can be weighted towards meat dishes. So if you’re organising a night out in mixed company, look no further than this handy list (with grateful thanks to the Vegans and Vegetarians Luxembourg Facebook Group for their input!).

If in doubt, the cuisines to go for are Italian and Indian. Even vegans are often able to find something delicious to eat, and vegetarians are definitely catered for in both. The key thing is choice. It’s boring going to a restaurant in a mixed group and scouring the menu for that one thing you can eat – so be kind to your vegetarian buddies, and consider booking restaurants with more than one suitable option!

Independent Café

This is a friendly bar-cum-restaurant with a young international crowd, conveniently located near the Gëlle Fra. Music can be too loud for dinner table conversations, but the lively atmosphere more than makes up for this. The menu leans towards substantial snacks, with something to please everyone.

They offer a Saturday breakfast and a Sunday brunch, and the weekday lunch menus include vegetarian options. A lot of the food is organic. It’s also possible to organise a private party there and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free can all be made on request. The atmosphere is cosy and the service is friendly.

Confucious Restaurant

With its modern ambiance and great food, this is a good choice for the evening. Parking is easy at the nearby Glacis, and there are bars nearby if you want to go for a drink before or after. The menu (also available as take-away) has a solid list of vegetable and tofu-based dishes. For the non-vegetarians reading this, it is worth noting that they have a ‘Business Lunch’ option (€11,50) but none of the set menus include vegetarian food.

  • Good for: a classy Chinese dinner experience

Manoir Kasselslay

Far away from the busy-ness of Lux-ville, this gourmet restaurant is très chic. Manoir Kasselslay is a 4 star hotel with a wonderful restaurant that also welcomes those not staying the night. Their Menu Végétarien has five courses and comes in at €55; there are two other options for the omnivores in the party. Culture vultures can combine this with a visit to the delightful Family of Man exhibition.

  • Good for: special occasions that demand special meals
