Bring on flip flops, crop tops and sunglasses! While summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21st, we are feeling hot, hot, hot. To celebrate the arrival of this gloriously sunny weather, why not dive into some of the city’s best gelato? Here are City Savvy’s top 5 ice cream parlours to make your tastebuds dance.
Undoubtedly the best Italian ice cream in the city, Bargello in the Gare (next to Bastelkiste craft shop) should be first on your list. Ice creams, sorbets, frozen yoghurts and patisseries. They even have a little outdoor terrace at the back.
- Good for: their amazing pistachio ice cream.
SmooJo markets itself as a smoothie and juice bar, so you can indulge without the guilt! If you haven’t already discovered SmooJo, the healthy(ish) alternative to ice cream, then make this one your next stop and indulge in some delicious frozen yoghurt in a wide and interesting variety of flavours. Infact, SmooJo is so popular they have just recently opened a second location (in Esch). SmooJo also offers free wifi.
- Good for: not just frozen yoghurt, try the tastiest ice coffee drinks this side of the pond.
You’ve probably already spotted this ice cream parlour on Place d’Armes with its colourful and irresistible displays. Don’t be put off by the crowds, it’s worth the wait and if you can get a seat at one of their outdoor tables it’s the perfect place for some people watching.
- Good for: their banana flavor, freshly made on the premises
Oh Oberweis! How we love you. So classy, so delicious, so Luxembourgish. As with their coffees, pastries and cakes, their ice cream does not disappoint. Whilst there are 5 Oberweis cafes around Luxembourg selling ice cream (Cloche d’Or, Lux Ville, City Concorde, Kirchberg and Gare), we suggest you treat yourself and head for their beautiful flagship cafe in the city centre.
- Good for: tartes glacées – yes, that really does mean ice cream tarts. Oh my.
Bonomeria – Gelateria Artigianale
This little Italian ice cream parlour is in Belair, within striking distance of the fabulous Castle Parc, and is well worth the detour. Friendly owners, reasonable prices and gorgeous ice cream treats. Sure to keep the little and big ones refreshed and happy!
- Good for: tempting your little ones to leave the park for a special treat.
Created by two French childhood friends, churned daily using a process that bans colouring agent and artificial flavours. While not a mom and pop shop, this gelato has world wide recognition but the majority are located in France. We recommend the organic green tea detox sorbet if you want to feel a little less naughty but still get your fix.
- Good for: When you find yourself in town, exhausted and need to put your feet up and watch the world go by.
- Where: Rue Philippe II, 2340 Luxembourg, Luxembourg (map)
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 12:00 to 20:00
