I got a call from one of our writers to go and see his comedy show, Brown Guys, Grey Skies.
Comedy shows of someone I know generally make me uncomfortable. Good comedy is both a little bit wrong and a little bit right and if Sundeep bombed, I’d feel terrible. If he told inappropriate sex jokes, I would also feel terrible because I know his wife. (It is Luxembourg, afterall- and after a few years, everyone knows EVERYONE).
Comedy needs a bit of a shadow but these guys hail from sunny places and work in what I understand as banking and HR. Where is the humor in either of those situations? I wondered if they would be able to walk that line carefully- dabbling a bit into the dark. I needn’t worry. Deepu Dileepan and Sundeep Bhardwaj belong on stage with their endearing observations and self mocking humor. Dating, parenting and religion are all fair game. Deepu interviews people who want jobs and the stories he told about some of the candidates answers had me cringing in such a good way.
One thing that I love about Luxembourg is the hysterical disasters that happen when you have too many cultures in one room and these guys nail it on the head.
No group is safe and their story telling is what makes this show fabulous. The confusion that they both have encountered while traveling make up some of the best stories. Anyone who can laugh about being falsely accused of being a terrorist is someone I want to have drinks with and hear more stories. Anyone who has experienced the lack of patient/doctor confidentiality in India is also someone I’d like to throw a few back with. These guys are seasoned performers and will hopefully continue to have awkward encounters and bring them on stage.
Humor is our buffer against dreary weather. In a land where it rains 99% of the year, humor is what we need more of. We need more Brown Guys and Grey Skies. Well, maybe less Grey Skies but definitely more of these Brown Guys.
Don’t miss these guys on Friday, May 25th at 9pm in Esch-Sur-Alzette at MK Bar.
