Following on from Halloween, we move quickly into some interesting Saint Days in November. Sabrina Deisges, together with Marie-Claire O’Sullivan-Dahm of LuxMeetGreet, explain the November traditions in the Duchy.

All Saints’ “Allerhellgen” and All Souls’ Day “Allerséilen

In the church year, 1st of November is the day when all the saints are commemorated. Since the 10th century, All Souls’ Day on the 2nd of November is the day the Catholic Church thinks of all the dead, especially those still in purgatory. Associated with this is the blessing of the graves, which often takes place on the afternoon of the previous day, the 1st of November. Graves will have been cleaned and decorated with flower arrangements for this occasion.

Saint Hubertus’ Day – “Haupeschdag

The 3rd of November is the anniversary of St Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters, who lived from 656 to 727. Legend has it that one Sunday when he was hunting in the Ardennes, he saw a stag carrying a crucifix between its antlers and he was asked by God to stop squandering his time on earthly pleasures. His vision made him join the clergy and he became a renowned bishop.

On Haupeschdag (November 3), which is traditionally also the opening date of the battue season, a mass is held in his honour and is attended by hunters in their full attire.

In Luxembourg, the battue season lasts from 17th of October until 14th of December. Hunters put signs up when a hunt is on, and it is best to avoid the forest during a battue!

Visiting a Hubertus Market

  • Sunday the 5th of November in Munshausen: the “Munzer Haupeschmaart” (which is said to date back to the 17th century). The village has a very special connection to Saint Hubertus as its coat of arms features the stag with the cross between its antlers. The market offers regional culinary delights as well as a revival of the old traditions and customs in this rural part of the Oesling. The tourist center Robbesscheier is again center stage for this market.
  • Saturday 4th to Sunday 5th of November in Berdorf in the Mullerthal. For the 12th time, this idyllic village in Luxembourg’s little Switzerland will transform its streets and barns into a big market. Regional delicacies will be sold and over 100 craft stalls will be present. On Sunday, a special mass will be held in the amphitheater in the forest. More information can be found here.
